Earthquake kit list

In the first 72 hours after an earthquake or other disaster you may need to meet your own needs. What should be in an emergency kit is summarised below based on the AFAD list.

What should be in an earthquake kit? Short list:

  • Food and water (high-calorie, non-perishable food; at least 1.5 litres of drinking water per person per day for 72 hours)
  • Hygiene items (soap, disinfectant, toothbrush, wipes, toilet paper)
  • Clothing (underwear, socks, season-appropriate spare clothes, raincoat)
  • Important documents (ID, property, insurance, DASK policy; copies or in a waterproof bag)
  • First aid and tools (first aid kit, battery radio, torch, spare batteries, whistle, blanket)
  • Special needs (regular medicines, baby/disabled/pet needs)

Where to keep the kit

Near the door, in an easy-to-reach place (hall, under wardrobe). Consider a separate kit for home, work and school. Check food and water expiry dates regularly.
